Max Penichet III
Max is a native of the Kansas City area and has been performing professionally since 2007. In 2006 he began playing electric bass in the former New Journey Church worship band with Chad and Bret Bourquin (Big Time Grain Co.). From 2007-2012 Max played for singer/songwriter Bret Bourquin in multiple bands, most notably Silver Soul Delight. During this time he began studying with Zach Rizer (former band leader of Kansas City’s Mouth). Max was in a trio named Electric Soul from 2009-2012 comprised of KMEA (Kansas Music Educators Association) All-State Jazz guitarist Keshav Ramaswami, and KMEA All-State Jazz drummer Nick Penichet. This jazz fusion trio was courted by a record label from Warner Bros. Records (Warner Music Group) until guitarist Ramaswami moved to New York City. In 2012 Max became the bassist for the Nexus Church worship band. While at Nexus Max met worship leader Victor Gossage, an accomplished singer and songwriter who toured the United States most notably with Lester Estelle Jr (Pillar, Kelly Clarkson).
Between 2012-2014 Max played in a six piece rock/blues band named Deja Voodoo in the Kansas City area. Soon thereafter, he joined a rock/pop/dance band named Retroflex with Victor Gossage. Max graduated from Spring Hill High School in 2012, and accepted a music scholarship at Ottawa University (OU), where he later received his Instrumental Music Education and Jazz Studies Performance degree for the Electric/Upright bass. Throughout his undergraduate collegiate career Max was the Principal Bassist in the University Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and also the electric/upright bassist in the University’s top jazz Combo. While at OU he studied under Todd Wilkinson, Keith Mallory, Steven McDonald, Bill McKemy, and continues to study under Kansas City Legend Bob Bowman. Bob won a Grammy award while playing for the famous Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, and is considered to be one of the best Jazz upright bass players in the United States.
Max now tours the midwest with Chad and Bret Bourquin as the full time bassist for the country band, Big Time Grain Company. Big Time Grain Co. has played many high profile shows including the Royals World Series Parade in front of an estimated 900,000 people. They have also had their music featured on National Television on NFL broadcast. Alongside BTGC, Max also tours with another well known and upcoming Kansas City country act, State Line Drive.
